18/08/2025

PROJECT INFORMATION

Project implementer: Damaris Solutions

Donor: Czech-UNDP Challenge Fund

Implementation period: 2025-2026

BASELINE STATE

Zenica and other cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina face significant waste management challenges-most waste ends up in open landfills, causing environmental burdens and wasting valuable resources. Modern waste-to-energy (WtE) technologies are not yet widely adopted in the region.

PROJECT AIM AND DEVELOPMENT ASPECTS

The project aims to modernize waste management in Zenica by introducing waste-to-energy (WtE) technologies and advancing the circular economy. Key activities include installing a solar-powered demonstration station, preparing a comprehensive feasibility study, and building local partners' capacities. Emphasis is placed on Czech know-how transfer and community engagement. The project will create a replicable model for other cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The expected outcomes are reduced landfill waste, energy production, and compliance with European environmental standards.
